Honoree: Melinda Gomez
Honored by: Human Options
Cause Area: Human & Family Services
Melinda began volunteering her time at our Minnie Street Family Resource Center in Santa Ana almost five years ago. Since then she has also volunteered at our CHEC Family Resource Center in San Juan Capistrano, and our South Orange County Family Resource Center in Lake Forest. Each month she continues to provide free advice and counseling sessions to Human Options Legal Advocacy clients who have questions about divorce, custody, child support, spousal support, and restraining orders. Melinda has graciously volunteered her time at our twice-annual 40 hours training to teach participants about the intersection of domestic violence and family law. Furthermore, she has been an integral member of our Pro Bono Committee and has brought two new volunteer attorneys into the fold, who now conduct family law and immigration clinics of their own.
Melinda is patient, thoughtful, and very thorough. Her strong advocacy background (including time spent volunteering at our Emergency Shelter while Melinda was a student at Whittier Law School) gives her a unique insight into what our clients go through on a daily basis. When asked about why she volunteers with us she said, “As an attorney in family law, I am able to be there for my clients during one of the most difficult and emotional times in their life. It is my goal and job to be there for them with a comforting ear and to advocate for their rights to obtain the most favorable results to assist them in moving on with their lives.”
Claudia Flores, the Site Supervisor at Minnie Street Family Resource Center where Melinda’s clinic is held said, “Melinda is very knowledgeable on Family Law matters and is able to listen to client’s concerns. She is able to provide options to empower clients in taking the next steps in their legal situation.”
We are so grateful for all of Melinda’s time and energy over the years!
