Honored by: South County Outreach
Cause Area: Hunger & Homelessness
South County Outreach is delighted to recognize the service of Care Worker volunteer Jan Finnegan by honoring her with a 2017 Spirit of Volunteerism Award. She is one of 30 Care Worker volunteers and 307 other weekly volunteers who keep South County Outreach operating.
Jan has been volunteering with South County Outreach for close to seven years. Each week she helps families and individuals in need as a Care Worker at the front desk of the agency. Jan is the first point of contact for those that are looking for services. She helps guide new clients through our agency’s enrollment process, and creates a comfortable environment for those that are unfamiliar to receiving assistance. As clients enter our agency for the first time, Jan takes an assessment of their individual situation and walks with them to the resource wall. She helps them through the different options for their situation and provides them with the contact information of fellow agencies for further assistance. Jan takes pride in this role and goes above and beyond to make sure that each person walking through the door feels welcomed and respected.
Jan has also taken on additional responsibilities during the holidays when larger client-focused events take place. Through extra participation, Jan is able to help clients in an extra special way. During events, clients instantly recognize her and they are grateful for her extra donation of time. One event that Jan is always eager to help with is the South County Outreach Toy Store Event. This event allows families to shop through our warehouse and choose Christmas gifts for their children. These are families that are currently receiving services with our organization and therefore enjoy seeing weekly volunteers, like Jan, during the event. Jan helps each shopper find the best items for their family, which is a quality that we are lucky to have within our volunteer team.
Her dedication to South County Outreach is unlike any other volunteer, which makes it hard from June – October when she and her husband are out, traveling to exciting places all over the world! They go to great lengths to keep the staff informed be sending monthly reports of their adventures with pictures of the breathtaking places they have been. When it is time for them to return the organization is buzzing with excitement! Jan’s compassion for serving the community is a constant reminder for fellow volunteers and staff that what we do truly makes a difference.
Jan started volunteering in Fall of 2010. Now almost seven years later she is still one of our most enthusiastic and hardworking volunteers at the front desk. She makes a positive impact each time she walks in for her weekly shift and our organization would not be the same without her.
